Gut Microbiome Testing
If digestion, energy or hormones have felt off for longer than you'd like to admit, the answer often lies in the gut. A gut microbiome test, sometimes called a comprehensive stool analysis, gives us a detailed, evidence-based picture of what is actually happening inside your digestive system, rather than guessing from symptoms alone.
As a registered Nutritional Therapist, I use gut health testing with clients across the UK, working entirely online, to get to the root of digestive, hormonal and energy concerns that diet and lifestyle changes alone haven't resolved.
What Is a Gut Microbiome Test?
A gut microbiome test analyses a stool sample to give a detailed breakdown of the bacteria, yeasts and other organisms living in your digestive tract, along with markers for digestion, inflammation and gut barrier health. Rather than a single snapshot, it is a full functional picture that considers:
Microbial balance: the balance and diversity of beneficial and less helpful bacteria
Inflammation: markers of low-grade inflammation in the gut lining
Digestive function: how well you are breaking down and absorbing fats, proteins and carbohydrates
Pathogens and overgrowth: presence of parasites, yeasts such as candida, or bacterial overgrowth
Intestinal permeability: markers linked to gut barrier integrity, sometimes described as "leaky gut"
Used well, this kind of gut health test turns vague symptoms into clear, measurable data, so any changes we make to your diet, supplements or lifestyle are targeted rather than trial and error.
Symptoms and Conditions That May Benefit From Testing
Gut health sits at the centre of so much more than digestion. I recommend a gut microbiome test to clients presenting with any of the following:
Bloating, wind, irregular bowel habits, or a diagnosis of IBS that hasn't fully resolved
Persistent fatigue or brain fog with no clear cause
Skin concerns such as eczema, acne or rosacea
Food sensitivities or new intolerances
Stubborn weight changes despite consistent effort
Low mood, anxiety or disrupted sleep, given the strong gut-brain connection
Hormonal imbalances, including perimenopause symptoms, PMS or PCOS, where the gut plays a role in oestrogen clearance
A history of antibiotic use, food poisoning or travel-related bowel upset autoimmune conditions, or a family history of them
A general sense that something isn't quite right, even when standard tests come back clear
If any of this sounds familiar, testing gives us somewhere concrete to start, rather than another round of restriction and guesswork.
How the Testing Process Works
Ordering a gut microbiome test through my practice is straightforward and fully supported from start to finish. Here is what to expect:
Consultation. We begin with a free discovery call, or your initial consultation if you're already a client, where we talk through your symptoms, history and goals
Test selection and kit dispatch. Based on what comes up, I recommend the specific test and provider best suited to your situation, and the kit is posted directly to your home (test kits are charged separately from consultation packages, and I'll confirm the exact cost before anything is ordered).
Sample collection. You complete the collection at home, following the provider's simple instructions, and post the sample back using the prepaid packaging
Lab analysis. Your sample is processed by the testing laboratory, with results typically available within two to four weeks depending on the provider
Results consultation. We go through your full results together on a video call, in plain English, so you understand exactly what your gut is telling us
Personalised plan. You leave with a written, practical plan covering food, supplements and lifestyle changes tailored to your results, with ongoing support to put it into action
Choosing the Right Gut Microbiome Test
Search for the best gut microbiome test and you'll quickly find several well-regarded names, among them GI-MAP, Doctor's Data GI360, Microba Explorer, Genova GI Effects and GutMapDx. Each is a respected, clinically-used provider, and each looks at your gut through a slightly different lens, covering a slightly different combination of markers at a different price point. It's no wonder this stage trips people up. Without a clinical background, it's genuinely hard to know which one matches your symptoms, and no one wants to spend their money on the wrong test.
This is exactly why I don't leave that choice to you. During our consultation, we'll talk through your symptoms, history and what you're hoping to understand, and I'll use that to guide you to the specific test best suited to your situation, explaining why it's the right fit before you commit to anything. You focus on telling me what's going on, and I'll take care of matching you to the right test.
Book Your Gut Microbiome Test
If you're ready to stop guessing and start understanding what's really going on in your gut, the first step is a free discovery call. We'll talk through your symptoms and I'll recommend the right path forward.
Testing is charged separately from my consultation packages; I'll always confirm the cost with you before any kit is ordered, so there are no surprises.
Put yourself back on the priority list. x
